Çınaraltı Precision Casting: ISO 9001 and 14001 integrated set-up

In a 140-employee foundry, the two certificates that an automotive customer required of its suppliers were obtained in 24 weeks.
Çınaraltı Precision Casting needed both ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certificates to stay on the supplier list of an automotive OEM customer. The plant already had production quality control records, but its processes were not defined and the legal environmental requirements were scattered among different people.
What did we do?
- A process map covering casting, mould, machining and shipping, with 18 performance indicators
- Combining waste, wastewater and emission permits in a single legal requirements register
- Environmental aspects and risk assessment for the melting furnace and sand system
- Internal auditor training for 14 managers and engineers
Result
Only two minor nonconformities were found at the first certification audit; both certificates were obtained in week 24. The automotive customer's supplier assessment score rose from 71 to 88.
